In July 2025, I had an opportunity to address the command officers and troops of Dallol Central Command in Jimma, Southwestern Ethiopia, during their annual celebration. I told the officers and troops (translation):
โWe are both committed to protecting and safeguarding our Motherland, but use different weapons: You defend Ethiopia with arms; I defend her with pen and laptop. You fight the enemy on land, in the air and over water. I fight the enemy in the court of law, the court of world public opinion, in cyberspace and in the infowars battle space.
“We both fight the bad guysโbut the real battle is no longer on the battlefield. The battle is not only about defending the sacred soil of our Motherland, but also about winning the hearts and minds of our people by ensuring their peace and prosperity. Never doubt, we shall winโnot by chance or by force alone, but because our cause of Ethiopian dignity, unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity is righteous and our conviction and love for our Motherland unshakable.”
