Tonight, August 21, 2026, at 9:00 PM, at the Addis Ababa International Convention Center, Ethiopia reached a remarkable milestone: the National Ethiopian Dialogue concluded with 99.75% consensus across all eight agenda areas.

The eight agendas covered nation-building; state structure, governance and political/electoral systems; Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa; religious affairs, historical grievances and reconciliation; institutional building, rule of law and human rights; socio-economic issues, including farmers and pastoralists; corruption and good governance; and peacebuilding and conflict resolution.

What happened tonight was extraordinary.

For nearly four hours straight, recommendation after recommendation was read. The delegates listened intently, patiently and respectfully. They even refused comfort breaks.

Then, one after another, the recommendation booklets were hand-delivered to Deputy Chief Commissioner Hirut Gebreselassie before the full plenary.

At the conclusion of each agenda recommendations reading, the hall erupted in massive applause.

But the most remarkable thing was not simply the applause. It was the atmosphere.

The delegates were relaxed, engaged and absorbed in the process. They talked with one another, exchanged comments, smiled and celebrated. There was a palpable sense of pride, accomplishment not because every difference had disappeared but because the delegates had fulfilled a sacred generational duty.

These 4,000 Ethiopians understood that they had been given an opportunity that may come only once in a century: the opportunity to sit together as citizens and help articulate a shared direction for their country.

They did not come merely to speak and complain.

They came to listen.

They came to understand.

They came to compromise.

They came to search for solutions.

They came to find common ground.

For too long, Ethiopia paid an enormous price for settling political differences through conflict and violence. Tonight, Ethiopia won a different way. For decades, we lost through war. Tonight, we won through dialogue.

Year after year, we lost precious lives, irreplaceable opportunities, trust and development through conflict. Tonight, we set a course to build peace, progress and prosperity through dialogue.

The real work, of course, begins now. Recommendations must be translated into action. Institutions must carry them forward. Citizens must remain engaged. Political and civic leaders must honor the spirit of dialogue.

But tonight is a moment to celebrate. Because Ethiopia has shown that political disputes do not have to end in violence. They can end around a table. Deep differences do not have to produce permanent division. They can be negotiated.

And dialogue does not have to be a one-time conference. It can become a political cultureโ€”a national practice for resolving disputes peacefully, from our schools to our communities, from our civic institutions to the halls of Parliament.
