Over the past year, Representative Gregory Meeks, (D-NY), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has been working harder than a funeral home fan in July to impose crippling sanctions against Ethiopia.
Meeks sponsored HR 6600 (“Ethiopia Stabilization, Peace, and Democracy Act”) and rammed it through his committee without any discussions.
HR 6600 is intended to cripple the Ethiopian economy and trigger massive social upheaval and rebellion to overthrow the first-ever democratically elected, African Union-certified free and fair election in Ethiopian history.
On March 30, 2021, Meeks sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken. “We urge the Administration to continue its efforts to assess credible reporting and impose targeted sanctions swiftly.”
On May 10, 2021, Meeks issued a statement “urging the Administration to urgently use all available tools, including sanctions and other restrictive measures, to hold all perpetrators accountable and bring an end to this conflict.”
In a May 26, 2021 op-ed entitled, “On Ethiopia, the U.S. Must Show Resolve”, Meeks came out with guns blazing:
Against this grim backdrop, few believe Ethiopia’s upcoming national elections stand a real chance of being free or fair… The Biden administration’s recent announcement of visa bans on those perpetuating the suffering in Tigray is a good start, but more robust measures are needed… Our interests cannot be met through a partnership with a failed state. A fraught US-Ethiopia relationship is a far lower price to pay than that of state collapse. The prudent course is clear. In support of a peaceful, prosperous, democratic Ethiopia, America must show resolve. (Italics added.)

By failing to properly disclose the $40,000 as a gift, he violated House rules and standards of conduct, and federal law.
Today (4/13/22), New York’s lieutenant governor turned himself into federal authorities to face charges of bribery and corruption on very similar allegations Meeks faced had faced soliciting campaign contributions as loans and using nonprofit organization to launder money.
Meeks paid $27,000 in campaign funds to a company set up by his treasurer — whose husband is on his congressional payroll.
On October 28, 2011, the National Legal and Policy Center filed a formal Complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) against Meeks alleging Meeks accepted illegal, in-kind contributions from R. Allen Stanford.
Allen Stanford was jailed for 110 years for $7bn Ponzi scheme.
Meeks also disguised personal gambling junkets to Las Vegas as a leadership PAC fundraiser.
Federal investigators examined Meeks’ ties to several nonprofit groups in Queens, N.Y. and allegations he misused thousands of dollars in donations raised for Hurricane Katrina victims were quietly dropped.
